Dr. Emily Young, DO, MA, MPH

Dr. Emily Young, DO, MA, MPH specializes in comprehensive psychiatric treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. As a board-certified family physician with a specialty in psychiatry, Dr. Young has a deep understanding of the mental, emotional, and physical considerations when working with people. She welcomes medically complex patients of all ages, including those with multiple medical problems, eating disorders, menstrual and menopausal disorders, autoimmune OCD (PANS/PANDAS), diagnostic complexity, and/or persons seeking gender-affirming hormone treatment.

Dr. Young grew up at the Ronald McDonald House in St. Petersburg, Florida, where her mother was the on-site house manager, and she lived with the families of children receiving care at the next-door pediatric hospital for the first few decades of her life. With this unique influence on her own personal growth, she maintains a deep appreciation for each person’s individual experience and truth. She prioritizes listening to and “hearing” her patients with curiosity and compassion, and she commits to treating each person as an equal human deserving of respect, trust, and support. She feels these patient-centered principles are paramount to providing high-quality, effective, and evidence-informed mental health care for each person.

Dr. Young earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and medical degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine.  She completed her residency at the University of Virginia and served as an attending within both UVA and Martha Jefferson health systems. With these collective experiences, Dr. Young assumed a pivotal role to serve as a lead child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents (CCCA), the only state-run child and adolescent psychiatric hospital in Virginia. She uses her experience as a high-school teacher in Teach For America and her Masters of Art in Teaching from American University to teach at national, state, and university levels on the topics of anxiety, depression, adolescent mental health, ADHD, autism, phase-of-life problems, bipolar disorder, and navigating care coordination within the Charlottesville and Virginia mental health systems. She thoroughly enjoys collaborating with other providers to create effective teams working on behalf of the patient, including with therapists, nutritionists, OT, PT, primary care, and specialty care.

Dr. Young concurrently earned her Masters in Public Health while in medical school, and she has utilized the training to provide services within nonprofit reproductive health centers, prisons, international medical clinics, public health departments, and free clinics. Notably, Dr. Young is one of the longtime medical directors of the Charlottesville Free Clinic for over a decade now.

Dr. Young lives in Charlottesville with her husband, two children, chiweenie, beagle, house cat, and corn snake. She volunteers weekly with International Neighbors, finds peace in practicing hot yoga, and uses weekend time for pottery, bonfires, the NBA, and her close-knit group of neighborhood friends.
